Field Notes Reporter Notebooks

Set of two 70-page top spiralbound memo books. Each book measures 3.75" wide by  8.25" tall, with college ruled lined paper (9/32", or 7.1mm), and a pocket on the inside.

From Field Notes: For years, people had been asking us to make a Reporter’s Notebook. So we did. Our Summer 2016 “Byline” Limited Edition was apparently exactly what people had hoped for. It was an instant classic, and quickly sold out. Then even more people wrote to ask us to make more Reporter’s Notebooks. So we did. “Front Page” is here, and will remain in production and in stock indefinitely.

Pelican 1910 106 Lumen Flashlight [Black]

51m7t6DcLThe Pelican 1910 is a small AAA flashlight that's about 2cm longer than the the Streamlight Microstream. Pelican, best known for their rugged gear cases, also makes some really nice flashlights. While none of the Pelican flashlights are tactical per se, I really like that the Pelican 1910 puts out over 40% more light than the Streamlight Microstream. In fact, the brightness of the 1910 is very comparable to the Microstream running a 10440 cell, but rather than the 20 minute runtime, you have two hours of runtime.

As expected with Pelican, the 1910 is IPX7 waterproof and has an anondized aircraft aluminum housing. While the light fits into your pocket pretty well, those who like using the fifth pocket to carry everyday carry items will find that it doesn't fit as well as the Streamlight.

  • Three Light Modes: High - 106 lumens | Low - 21 Lumens | Momentary - 106 Lumens
  • Runtimes: High - 2 hours | Low - 4 hours
  • Battery: 1x AAA 1.5V Alkaline, Lithium or Rechargeable battery (Do NOT use 10440 cells)
  • Tail cap clicky switch
  • Pocket clip

anker powercore 2 20000 portable charger

Ever left your phione at home? How about having a dead phone half way through the day?
Being left "exposed and naked" without juice isn't fun, and your smartphone becomes little more than a brick in your pocket. The Anker PowerCore II 20000 is a 20000mAh portable battery charger that has the ability to recharge an iPhone 6 three to five times, and a Galaxy Note 4 two to four times, but the fun doesn't end there. The Powercore has three USB Charge ports to charge up to three devices at the same time, and it's best feature: Dual recharging ports to recharge the portable battery pack faster!

CRKT Eat 'N Tool Does More Than Feed The Beast!

crkt eat n tool

OK, so I admit... I'm just an IT Desk Warrior. My fitbit never clocks more than 6000 steps when I'm in the office, and I only get 6K when the server room is going down in flames (or a DDOS attack).

It's times like this, when the IT team is under fire, that we often miss a formal lunch and have to resort to eating whatever we can when we have a moment between server reboots.

Doing a review on such a simple tool might seem odd, but the CRKT Eat 'N Tool is one of my best under-fire lunch friends. No matter the situation, the CRKT Spork offers assurances that whereever I am, I can eat... even if it's a plain ol' can of tuna, cold soup right from the can, or Quaker Oats oatmeal mixed with cold water from the water cooler down the hall.

I might make life as a server admin seem a bit harsh and spartan, but often times, when you and the understaffed and underpaid IT team battle attacks all day to keep your server farm running, it's a necessity.

The CRKT offers a firm, solid eating tool that does a lot more than just get you fed. While that's it's primary purpose, the CRKT Eat 'N Tool has 10mm, 8mm and 6mm nut drivers in it's handle that work well for racking servers.

There's also a flat edge that's touted as a screwdriver, but for IT work, I needed to grind the thickness down so that it could fit into the smaller screws found on these servers.

After work, it's got a bottle opener on the side allowing you to crack that cold one with ease in the 40° server room with your closest friends. LOL

While nothing replaces a multitool, the CRKT Eat 'N Tool has gotten me through in a pinch, and yes, it gets me fed as well.

The Aukmont Vintage Canvas Backpack Is Perfect For A Low Profile Everyday Carry Backpack

Aukmont 19 Liter Canvas BackpackOne of the things that I have to say is that I am all in favor of blending in with the crowd. From day to day, in many ways it's better to get in and out without people really noticing or remembering. When it comes to backpacks, even though I have a few tactical backpacks from the guys at Maxpedition, Fox Tactical and Condor, I prefer to use high quality backpacks that "normal" people carry everyday.

You never know when you might end up in a seedy part of town, and the last thing you want is for someone to think that you have a $1,500 laptop and other really cool gear that they can jack you for, right? That's where the Aukmont Vintage Canvas Backpack comes into play. This backpack is perfect for suburbia. Whether it means working out of a Starbucks or at a satellite office, this 19 liter backpack will carry what you need.

  • Eco-friendly casual life style.
  • Cotton canvas backpack with leather deco.
  • Made from senior durable sturdy canvas
  • Plenty of pockets
  • Every corner and pressure lines are very neat.
  • Adjustable shoulder straps for carrying comfort.
  • Dimensions: Approx. 11.8 x 15.8 x 6.7"(L x H x W)

  • M258 A1 Decontamination Kit [Cheap Waterproof Box]

M258A1 Decon Kit smI stumbled across the M2581A1 Decontamination Kit at the local Army Surplus store this past week. It's a military chemical decontamination kit used up to roughly 2001, and you can easily find these kits online. Most of the sources that I see are selling the weatherproof boxes without the kit, and that's exactly what you want. These boxes are perfect for small medical kits, your EDC personal carry, electronics, or even to be used for Geotagging, burying cash and valuables or something where weather resistance is key. I'd only purchased two of these containers, but I'm going to have to go back and get more... Like 10 more!

  • Make Free Calls To Regular Phones With Android Phones

Free calls repurpose old android phone 1960Perhaps you've upgraded phones over the years and have an old android phone laying in a drawer or storage box.

With all the open Wi-Fi hotspots that you can find now (places like McDonalds, Starbucks and Taco Bell probably even have it), You can repurpose that old Android phone to be useful again. Provided that it's at least Android 3, many popular calling apps work, but most have a limitation that they can only call other people who use the app for free. If you want to call landlines and other cellular phones, then you'll end up paying money to make the call. As of this article, Google Voice via Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer is the only service that allows you to make calls throughout the USA for free to any phone.
