From Field Notes: For years, people had been asking us to make a Reporter’s Notebook. So we did. Our Summer 2016 “Byline” Limited Edition was apparently exactly what people had hoped for. It was an instant classic, and quickly sold out. Then even more people wrote to ask us to make more Reporter’s Notebooks. So we did. “Front Page” is here, and will remain in production and in stock indefinitely.

Fisher Space Pen Is The Best EDC Pen

fisher space pen bullet

How many times have we all been on the phone, and the caller wants to give us a phone number to jot down? Problem is that there's never a pen around when you need it, so you have to go searching for one.

Now, after a couple moments of desperate searching, you've finally found a pen, but as you go to copy the numbers down, you find out it doesn't work. You gotta ask the caller to hold on another minute while you search for another elusive pen, which you eventually find in the basement in a your tool box.

You Need The Fisher Space Pen

The Fisher Space Pen "Bullet", specifically is small enough to fit into the fifth pocket of your jeans. Because it's also a space pen, you can rely on it delivering ink to your writing surface in even the most extreme conditions. Forget about having to search for a pen. You have one in your pocket, ready to go. From taking critical field notes in your journal in a torrential downpour to chronicling your trek up K2 (and everything in between), the Fisher Space Pen is ready when you need it most.

The Fisher Space Pen's pressurized cartridge will reliably work in temperatures from -30ºF to +250ºF, and will work in even colder climates when you keep it close to your body to maintain a higher warmth level. The Fisher Space Pen was used on missions up Everest, in the hottest of deserts, under water expeditions and yes, in zero G -- outer space. This pen works reliably the first time and every time until it's dry (don't forget to get some refills, and make sure they're the pressurized ones.)

My Fisher Space Pens

I carry the bullet with me everywhere. I also carry a couple other pens, but this one is the one that I'll pull out when I'm in the rain, when it's winter and my bag's been in a frozen car all day, or if it's been baking in the sun in the summer time.

I use the pressurized refills like they're their own pens. I "cap" the pens using thin coffee stirs that you get at 7-11 in the coffee bar. I cut the stir a bit longer than the narrow part of the shaft so that the ball point doesn't touch anything. I have three in use:

  • Condor MA45 iPouch
  • Condor MA26 Gadget Pouch
  • In my car's glove compartment

The actual bullet pen stays with the "Rite in the Rain" notebook.

I prefer the PR4B Black Ink Bold Point Space Pen Pressurized Cartridges which are 1.3mm bold lines. Its easier to see the lines in low light, broader lines for better weathering and just a nicer feel, in my opinion than the medium and fine points.

The best one for EDC / Pocket use is the Fisher 400 series Space Bullet Space Pen. It's smooth, there's no edges so it doesn't get snagged on anything as easily as a conventional pen. When capped, the pen is only 3.75" long, but when in use, it's 5.25" - perfect for comfortable writing.

If you are going to be using the pen with gloves on a lot, then you'll probably want to go for the Fisher 725B Trekker Space Pen. It has knurling around the housing giving your gloves a sure grip on the pen.

  • Packable Backpacks For Traveling And Everyday Carry

thumb AmazonBasics Ultralight Packable Day Pack Backpack 1I've carried a packable backpack in my main Kenneth Cole reaction (work) backpack for years. The actual packable backpack has changed from time to time, but there's always one in the backpack. Having a secondary backpack has come in handy many times over the years, and it's one of the first things that I check for when I do a bag inventory to make sure I have what I need in my Everyday Carry.

Packable backpack are usually very light, and when packed up, don't take much space. Often, I'll use mine when I'm going to lunch, or to an off site client meeting and I don't need to carry the whole main bag (it's 20lbs). This list of packable backpacks are some of the best that you could have in your EDC in case you need more hauling capacity.

  • How To Make Coffee At Your Desk with a Sterno Stove

thumb I used a sterno stove to make coffeeI have the benefit of being able to work from home a lot of the time. Tonight is one of those nights, and I decided that I wanted a bit of coffee to help keep me going while I worked. Now, depending on how flexible your work environment is, you may even be able to make coffee at your desk like I'm doing tonight, but you might want to save this for when you're at home and no one can tell what to do.

  • Do You Need An RFID Blocking Wallet, Or Is It Not Necessary?

thumb do i need an rfid blocking walletEver since RFID blocking wallets came out, people have been wondering "Do I really need an RFID wallet?" Here's the thing. In the good old USA, most credit cards, IDs and other cards don't have RFID yet, and beyond that, "Skimming" information from an RFID card, the hacker (if you will) would need to have a reader inches away from the card. The fact is that if you don't have any RFID chips in your cards (not to be confused with the chip cards with the smartchip embedded) then you don't have anything to worry about and having an RFID wallet is not necessary. If for some reason you do have an RFID card, the hacker would have to get uncomforatably close to you in order to get a read on the card. All else failing, it would be possible to place an RFID reader under a chair that you sit on, bringing the skimmer within range, but again, other than security companies showing all of us that it's possible and scaring the masses, this really hasn't been an issue in the US at all, partly due to the slow inception of RFID technology.

  • Corsair Stealth Survivor USB Drives And USB Drive Encryption

Corsair Survivor USB Drive Kid TestedAwhile back, I happened to get ahold of a Corsair Stealth Survivor USB Drive.

It was an impulse purchase, but what tech geek (like me) could pass up a really cool USB drive like this? After a three months of hard use, a couple run ins with my niece using it for a teething toy, and dropping it from twenty feet, it still works 100%.

    What an excellent investment!

  • What To Put In Your Winter Survival Kit For Your Car

winter survival kit for your carIt's gotten really cold here in Michigan over the past couple weeks. It feels like I just got done raking leaves. Now I'm putting together my winter survival kit for my car, and I realized that it's time for my 2017 Winter vehicle survival kit blog post. I've written a couple of these types of posts before, but this time, we'll take a look at the things that you might want to have in your car in case of emergencies, getting stranded, or breaking down on the road as you travel these holidays.

  • US Army Compass Pouch LC-1 Coat & Belt Everyday Carry

thumb US Army Compass Pouch EDC 10A couple days ago I stopped in Joe's Army Navy over in Royal Oak, MI. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but as always, I walked out with some items. One of the items was a Compass Pouch (LC-1). I had a few of these a while ago, and I really liked them to keep small items in. With this one, I decided that I'd use it as a very small Pocket Everyday Carry that holds a few OTC Meds and First Aid. Due to it's small 4"x4"x1.5" capacity, it's perfect, and these compass pouches like mine, usually come with an Alice Clip that was the Molle System's predecessor. I like this little clip because it's easy to clip the pouch to my belt if needed. Let's take a look inside to see what I've put in it.
