The Everyday Carry

GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless 18oz Cup

Its kind of hard to do a review on something as simple as this GSI stainless steel cup, but I think that I have enough to go on to write a fairly decent review.

I've been using this stainless steel cup for about two weeks now, and it's really been put through the paces. So far, here's a list of everything that I can remember using it for:

  • Morning Coffee
  • Various juices & milk
  • Mixed drinks after work (This has a story with it)
  • Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Snack bowl (Goldfish, Cheese-Its, peanuts and so on)
  • Water boiler (for testing purposes)

While the only limitation is that you probably wouldn't want to put it in the microwave, you could, on the other hand, use it over a fire if needed to melt snow into water, for example. I know... pretty extreme.

I really like the cup actually because it's easy to clean after use, and you can fit it over a 1 litre bottle of water, or put two tuna/chicken 5oz cans in it (or one pack of Lipton's soup in a cup and one 5oz can of chicken for extra meat :D).

The handle is chrome plated, and mine did have a small issue of the chrome flaking off in one small 1cm spot.

I tested the cup by boiling some water on the stove in it. The cup held up well, but did show a little bit of discoloration around the bottom, which was expected. The water came to a boil, and I found that I had to use a hot mit to remove the cup from the stove. I added the dry Lipton's chicken noodle soup, covered the cup with a small plate and waited 10 minutes.

The soup came out surprisingly good. The noodles were soft and the freeze dried chicken bits were pretty tasty too.

I plan on getting one for each member of the family within the next week or two so that when we're out camping, everyone has one to use.

  • Repurpose Beef Jerky Bags For Water Storage

beef jerky bag water storageBeef Jerky is one of my favorite snacks. If it weren't so darn expensive, I'd be eating a lot more. Funny thing is that those bags that the Jerky comes it are completely waterproof! Most of the beef jerky bags also have a Ziploc enclosure to reseal the bag if you don't eat all the jerky (like that EVER happens). The seals on the side are really good as well, making the beef jerky bag the perfect bag when you have nothing else, and want or need to carry water.

  • Cyalume ChemLights - Is Carrying Glow Sticks Worth It?

military cyalume chemlightsCyalume Chemlights, more popularly known as Glow Sticks, can be a help in the dark, chasing away your kid's nightmares, and lighting up jack-o-lanterns in a safe, stable way, but chemlights can also be found in military load outs, bug out bags, prepper gear and of course, everyday carry pouches. The question is whether it's worth it to carry Cyalume Glow Sticks as a light source, or not?

  • Everyday Carry Body Cams: Should You Have One In Your EDC?

XANES T69 Infrared Night Vision Body CamThere's the saying, "No pictures, no proof" which simply means that if you don't have photos or video, whatever you said happened, didn't happen because you can't prove it. That's why we're looking at cheap body cameras to add to your everyday carry. In a world where fights and shootings can break out at any time, having a recording device such as a pen cam or body cam that's ready at a moment's notice is almost an essential for the EDC. For law enforcement, body cams are critical for gathering evidence and many police departments require their officers to wear one.

  • Elan Field Book: A Cheap Alternative To Field Notes

edc pocket notebook field book elan publishing companyField Notes pocket notebooks are pretty expensive when you go through two a month. I'm always on the hunt for something more cost effective, and recently I came across the Elan Publishing Company Field Book (stk# elan-fn-001b).

These nice pocket notebooks come in a set of five for $9.99 and offer 24 sheets / 48 pages per book. It's just $2 per book as opposed to the $3.33 per Field Notes book. Overall, the quality is very comparable and durability is every bit as good as the Field Notes brand.

  • Nebo Lil Larry 6373 Work Light 250 Lumens White/Red LED

thumb NEBO LiL Larry Work LightOK, so I was saving the second Nebo work light for today's review. Yesterday, I reviewed the Nebo LEO 220 Lumens flashlight and this little flashlight is of similar design. Although it doesn't have the spotlight head that the LEO has, the Lil Larry (Stock# 6373) has it's own set of really cool features.

As the title says, it's a 250 lumen work light, but has a low mode putting out about 100 lumens, and a red LED emergency flasher mode that blinks twice a second. The flashlight costs around $18 on Amazon, and is the perfect work light for your home, car or everyday carry bag.

  • Nebo LEO 220 Lumen Pocket Work Light

thumb nebo leo black grayNormally I don't get into "normal" flashlights, but today, the LEO worklight by Nebo caught my eye. It was a bit different than most other cheap LED worklights you might find in Walmart or online, and I felt convinced that I had to get it.

The NEBO LEO is a very bright 220 lumen work lamp that has a swivel-out rotating head to put the light where you need it, but it also has a 80 lumen flashlight at the top as well for spot use. With a price of less than $20 it's a perfect AAA worklight that won't break the bank!

  • US Army Compass Pouch LC-1 Coat & Belt Everyday Carry

thumb US Army Compass Pouch EDC 10A couple days ago I stopped in Joe's Army Navy over in Royal Oak, MI. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but as always, I walked out with some items. One of the items was a Compass Pouch (LC-1). I had a few of these a while ago, and I really liked them to keep small items in. With this one, I decided that I'd use it as a very small Pocket Everyday Carry that holds a few OTC Meds and First Aid. Due to it's small 4"x4"x1.5" capacity, it's perfect, and these compass pouches like mine, usually come with an Alice Clip that was the Molle System's predecessor. I like this little clip because it's easy to clip the pouch to my belt if needed. Let's take a look inside to see what I've put in it.
