Outdoor Products Backpack Cover 20 Day Review

This $8 Backpack Cover is A Must Have In The Rain If You Have Electronics In Your Bag

Have you ever been caught in a downpour, and your main concern was all the stuff (including electronics) in your backpack getting wet? Yeah, that was me last month. I had to walk from our offices to a client's that was about a mile away. Normally, I look forward to walking over, but on this paticular day, I was caught in a downpour.

Determined not be be caught off guard again, I ordered the Outdoor Products Backpack Cover just for situations like this. It's a single peice of lightweight waterproof nylon sheet that encloses the top, sides, bottom and front of the backpack to guard it against rain. The strap side that sits against your back is open, so it's not completely waterproof. In a fairly heavy rain last week, I tested it out and walked to and from lunch with the backpack covered. Since this was just a test, I didn't put anything in the pack that would fry out if it got wet, but I was more than ecstatic to find that everything stayed very dry.

What The Outdoor Products Backpack Cover Will Cover

The bag itself measures 34" x 15" x 10". Suffice it to say that it fully covers just about any 17" Laptop Backpack with extra room to spare. I even got it around my Large Tactical Backpack used for days when I have to carry both 17" Windows and Mac Laptops.

Water Resistance

So I wrapped my usual backpack in the cover and placed it in the shower. I let it "rain" on the backpack for 10 minutes, and none of the insides got wet. In the real world, I've used the cover twice, and both times, it never let any water soak through the compartments (the shoulder straps are unprotected, so they got as wet as I did). I am not sure how well it will do if you're out all day in the pouring rain, but from what I've seen, I have no reason to think that it wouldn't hold up and keep your backpack dry.

How It Covers The Backpack

Even though it's a relatively flat sheet of nylon, the drawstrings somehow close the cover around the backpack well to protect it from the rain. Never had issues putting the cover on the backpack, and it sits in the side pocket right now if I need it.

I purchased mine on Amazon for about $8, but I've seen them in Walmart as well for about the same price. I'm considering buying one for my wife and oldest daughter. I found that it's really baggy if I put it on kid sized backpacks, so I'm still hunting for one that would fit those smaller packs, but there's no reason this one wouldn't work in a pinch.

  • Packable Backpacks For Traveling And Everyday Carry

thumb AmazonBasics Ultralight Packable Day Pack Backpack 1I've carried a packable backpack in my main Kenneth Cole reaction (work) backpack for years. The actual packable backpack has changed from time to time, but there's always one in the backpack. Having a secondary backpack has come in handy many times over the years, and it's one of the first things that I check for when I do a bag inventory to make sure I have what I need in my Everyday Carry.

Packable backpack are usually very light, and when packed up, don't take much space. Often, I'll use mine when I'm going to lunch, or to an off site client meeting and I don't need to carry the whole main bag (it's 20lbs). This list of packable backpacks are some of the best that you could have in your EDC in case you need more hauling capacity.

  • How To Make Coffee At Your Desk with a Sterno Stove

thumb I used a sterno stove to make coffeeI have the benefit of being able to work from home a lot of the time. Tonight is one of those nights, and I decided that I wanted a bit of coffee to help keep me going while I worked. Now, depending on how flexible your work environment is, you may even be able to make coffee at your desk like I'm doing tonight, but you might want to save this for when you're at home and no one can tell what to do.

  • Do You Need An RFID Blocking Wallet, Or Is It Not Necessary?

thumb do i need an rfid blocking walletEver since RFID blocking wallets came out, people have been wondering "Do I really need an RFID wallet?" Here's the thing. In the good old USA, most credit cards, IDs and other cards don't have RFID yet, and beyond that, "Skimming" information from an RFID card, the hacker (if you will) would need to have a reader inches away from the card. The fact is that if you don't have any RFID chips in your cards (not to be confused with the chip cards with the smartchip embedded) then you don't have anything to worry about and having an RFID wallet is not necessary. If for some reason you do have an RFID card, the hacker would have to get uncomforatably close to you in order to get a read on the card. All else failing, it would be possible to place an RFID reader under a chair that you sit on, bringing the skimmer within range, but again, other than security companies showing all of us that it's possible and scaring the masses, this really hasn't been an issue in the US at all, partly due to the slow inception of RFID technology.

  • Corsair Stealth Survivor USB Drives And USB Drive Encryption

Corsair Survivor USB Drive Kid TestedAwhile back, I happened to get ahold of a Corsair Stealth Survivor USB Drive.

It was an impulse purchase, but what tech geek (like me) could pass up a really cool USB drive like this? After a three months of hard use, a couple run ins with my niece using it for a teething toy, and dropping it from twenty feet, it still works 100%.

    What an excellent investment!

  • US Army Compass Pouch LC-1 Coat & Belt Everyday Carry

thumb US Army Compass Pouch EDC 10A couple days ago I stopped in Joe's Army Navy over in Royal Oak, MI. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but as always, I walked out with some items. One of the items was a Compass Pouch (LC-1). I had a few of these a while ago, and I really liked them to keep small items in. With this one, I decided that I'd use it as a very small Pocket Everyday Carry that holds a few OTC Meds and First Aid. Due to it's small 4"x4"x1.5" capacity, it's perfect, and these compass pouches like mine, usually come with an Alice Clip that was the Molle System's predecessor. I like this little clip because it's easy to clip the pouch to my belt if needed. Let's take a look inside to see what I've put in it.
